Pune Bus Rape Case: Accused Detained by Police

NEW DELHI: Pune Police successfully apprehended the man accused of allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman inside a bus at Pune’s Swargate bus station. The suspect, identified as Dattatray Gade (37), was taken into custody around midnight from Shirur Tehsil, according to PTI reports.

Details of the Incident

The alarming incident occurred early Tuesday morning when Gade, a known history-sheeter, allegedly assaulted the woman who was waiting to catch a bus to Phaltan, located approximately 100 km away. Gade deceived the survivor by claiming that her bus was stationed elsewhere, leading her to an unoccupied Shivshahi bus within the depot premises. After persuading her to enter the vehicle, he followed her aboard and allegedly committed the assault before fleeing the scene.

Criminal Background of the Accused

Gade has a criminal record with six previous cases involving theft, robbery, and chain-snatching in Pune and Ahilyanagar district. Notably, he had been released on bail in 2019 for one of these offenses.

Police Investigation Efforts

In their pursuit of justice, authorities deployed thirteen police teams across various locations in the state. A comprehensive search operation in Shirur Tehsil included the use of sniffer dogs and drones to thoroughly scan sugarcane fields. Moreover, law enforcement officials issued a monetary reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information leading to the apprehension of the accused.
