PTPA, Co-Founded by Djokovic, Sues Tennis Governing Bodies for Anti-Competitive Practices

Novak Djokovic’s PTPA Takes Legal Action Against Tennis Governing Bodies

The Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA), co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has filed lawsuits against key tennis governing bodies: the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), International Tennis Federation (ITF), and International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The PTPA alleges anti-competitive practices and player exploitation across multiple jurisdictions, including the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union.

Allegations of Collusion and Player Welfare Issues

The PTPA claims that the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA act as a cartel, engaging in collusion to fix prize money, enforce unsustainable schedules, and compromise player health. The organization has stated, “The lawsuits expose systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices, and a blatant disregard for player welfare that have persisted for decades.”

Concerns Over Player Treatment

Among the PTPA’s specific complaints are issues related to player welfare, such as matches played in extreme heat, late-night finishes, and inconsistent tennis ball specifications. Additional grievances include invasive searches, random drug tests, and limitations on sponsorship and image rights.

Responses from Governing Bodies

The ATP and WTA have expressed intentions to defend against these allegations vigorously. The ATP stated, “While we focus on reforms that benefit players, the PTPA has chosen division through misinformation.” The WTA called the PTPA’s actions “regrettable and misguided,” affirming their commitment to player welfare and the integrity of the sport.
