Pro-Khalistan Protester Attempts to Disrupt EAM Jaishankar’s Visit to the UK
NEW DELHI: The Indian government has expressed its discontent regarding the misuse of democratic freedoms by pro-Khalistan separatists, following a security breach during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to the UK. Although the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not confirmed an official protest to London, they emphasized the expectation that the host government will uphold its diplomatic obligations.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of EAM to the UK. We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists.”
UK Response to the Incident
In response to India’s statement, the UK condemned the incident as “completely unacceptable.” A spokesperson remarked, “While the UK upholds the right to peaceful protest, any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or disrupt public events are completely unacceptable.” The Metropolitan Police acted swiftly to ensure the security of diplomatic visitors, aligning with their international commitments.
Impact on Bilateral Relations
The issue of anti-India extremism continues to be a challenging aspect of Indo-UK relations. During his meeting with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Jaishankar raised concerns regarding the freedom enjoyed by these extremists.
During the visit, pro-Khalistan protesters gathered outside Chatham House, attempting to heckle the minister as he departed in his car. A video captured one protester attempting to pull at an Indian flag, though he was quickly restrained by police.
