Political Strategist Prashant Kishor Booked Amidst Student Protests in Bihar
A police case has been filed against Prashant Kishor, the political strategist turned leader of the Jan Suraaj party, along with several party leaders, coaching centre owners, and approximately 700 unidentified protesters in Bihar. This action follows a day of violent student-led demonstrations against the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination held on Sunday.
Allegations Against Kishor and Others
Kishor and his associates are accused of “unauthorisedly” gathering and instigating protestors, leading to a significant law and order disturbance. The situation escalated when students protested against the BPSC’s Integrated Combined (Preliminary) Competitive Examination (CCE) 2024, demanding its cancellation. The protests reached a boiling point at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, where clashes erupted between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Violence Erupts at Gandhi Maidan
According to police reports, the Jan Suraaj Party conducted a protest march without the necessary permissions, which resulted in violence, including damage to police equipment and confrontations with officers. Police used batons and water cannons to disperse the gathering, which aimed to march toward Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s residence for a dialogue.
Kishor’s Support for Students
Despite the turmoil, Kishor joined the students in their protest, emphasizing their right to peaceful demonstration in public spaces. He expressed his intent to facilitate a meeting between the students and the Chief Secretary, although the students insisted on speaking only with the Chief Minister, leading to police intervention.
Future of Jan Suraaj Party
Having officially launched as a political party in October, Jan Suraaj is preparing to contest all seats in Bihar during the upcoming assembly elections. The recent events have raised critical questions about the government’s approach to public dissent and the fundamental right to protest.
