Pope Francis Faces Health Challenges Amid Pneumonia Battle
Pope Francis, currently hospitalized with pneumonia, suffered a breathing crisis on Friday, causing him to vomit. Thankfully, he was quickly administered oxygen and responded well to treatment, according to an AFP report.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has spent the last two weeks at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, experienced a bronchospasm episode that led to a sudden respiratory decline. The Vatican reported, “The Holy Father promptly underwent broncho-aspiration and began non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response on gas exchange.”
Status of His Health
Despite the recent setback, Francis remained alert and cooperative. His medical team is closely monitoring his condition over the next 24 to 48 hours to assess any further deterioration. Earlier on Friday, Vatican insiders suggested that Francis’ condition was no longer critical, but his health status remains “reserved,” making predictions about his recovery uncertain.
Speculation of Resignation Grows
This fourth hospitalization during his 12-year papacy has reignited speculation about whether Francis might step down. Vatican expert Marco Politi mentioned that if the pope recovers, he may complete the Jubilee year celebrations but could reconsider his position afterward.
Francis has previously expressed openness to resignation, yet he has affirmed he is not ready to retire. For now, the focus remains on the pope’s recovery, as the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics await further updates.
