India Clinches ICC Champions Trophy Title Against New Zealand
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Team India for their remarkable victory in the ICC Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in a gripping final held in Dubai.
“An exceptional game and an exceptional result! Proud of our cricket team for bringing home the ICC Champions Trophy. They’ve played wonderfully throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our team for the splendid all-around display,” PM Modi expressed in a post on X.
Historic Opening Stand
India’s captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill rekindled memories of cricket legends Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar by becoming the third pair to secure a century-opening stand in a Champions Trophy final.
Match Highlights
Facing a competitive target of 252 runs, India began strongly with a 105-run partnership between Rohit and Gill. Rohit led the attack, while Gill balanced aggression with caution. Despite the Kiwis’ efforts, including a stunning one-handed catch by Glenn Phillips to dismiss Gill, India’s chase remained on track.
Rohit Sharma’s aggressive innings of 76 runs (83 balls) laid a solid foundation, featuring seven fours and three sixes. As wickets fell, Rohit’s counterattack kept India in the hunt, ultimately leading to a well-deserved victory.
