Parliamentary Panel Demands Action on Ranveer Allahbadia’s Controversial Comments, Aims to Regulate OTT and Social Media

Parliamentary Panel Takes Action on Social Media Influencer Controversy

NEW DELHI: In a significant move, a parliamentary committee led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has reached out to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry regarding the controversial remarks made by social media influencer Ranveer Allahbadia. The committee is demanding a response by February 17 on potential amendments to existing laws designed to regulate content on social media platforms and OTT services.

Crass Comments Spark Outrage

The parliamentary panel’s concerns were echoed by various members from different political parties. BJD MP Sasmit Patra emphasized the necessity for stringent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Notable BJP MPs, including Anil Baluni and VD Sharma, along with Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, voiced their worries regarding the impact of such comments on public decency.

Legal Consequences Looming

In tandem with the parliamentary actions, Assam Police have issued fresh summons to several YouTubers, including Ashish Chanchlani and Ranveer Allahbadia. This follows a complaint alleging that they promoted obscenity and engaged in sexually explicit discussions on their YouTube show, “India’s Got Latent.” The complaint was filed by Alok Boruah, a local resident, claiming that these discussions harmed public morality.

Regulating Content in the Digital Age

This controversy highlights a growing concern about the regulation of content produced by social media influencers. As the digital landscape evolves, it becomes essential to strike a balance between freedom of expression and upholding societal values.
