During a recent press conference ahead of Army Day, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi made a significant statement regarding the ongoing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He identified Pakistan as the “epicentre” of terrorism, claiming that the violence in the region is being orchestrated from across the border. Gen Dwivedi emphasized that the situation is “firmly” under control, with an impressive 60% of terrorists neutralized last year being of Pakistani origin. He highlighted a positive trend, stating that Jammu and Kashmir is transitioning from “terrorism to tourism” as security continues to improve.
Counter-Terrorism Efforts
In his remarks, the Army Chief confirmed that the Indian Army has been authorized for emergency procurement to enhance counter-terror operations.

Gen Dwivedi mentioned that the ceasefire established in 2021 with the Pakistan military is holding along the Line of Control (LoC); however, infiltration attempts from the Pakistani side persist.
Terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir
According to Gen Dwivedi, the recent spike in violence in Jammu and Kashmir is being orchestrated by Pakistan. He noted that 80% of the current terrorist remnants in the Valley are of Pakistani origin.
Positive Developments
Despite recent challenges, the region saw over five lakh pilgrims participating in the Amarnath Yatra, and the peaceful conduct of elections indicates a positive shift. “The theme of terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape,” he stated.

In 2024, the Army inducted 15,000 additional troops in Jammu and Kashmir, contributing significantly to reducing violence.
