Opposition Walks Out of Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI: The second part of the Budget session commenced with a dramatic walkout by Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha. The uproar stemmed from the contentious issues of delimitation and the National Education Policy (NEP).
DMK’s Stand on Delimitation
The DMK party took a strong stance against the government’s approach to the NEP in Tamil Nadu. DMK MP P Wilson expressed concerns regarding the upcoming delimitation exercise, emphasizing that the state may face unfair representation in Parliament due to population growth policies. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu’s population growth has been minimal, raising alarms about losing parliamentary seats if changes are based solely on population metrics.
Government’s Response
Union Health Minister JP Nadda criticized the Opposition’s tactics, accusing them of undermining the parliamentary process. He urged them to familiarize themselves with parliamentary rules, insisting that the government is ready for constructive debate.
Concerns Over Fair Representation
DMK MP Tiruchi Siva stated that if the delimitation exercise proceeds based on population, Southern states like Tamil Nadu could see a significant decrease in representation, potentially dropping from 39 to 31 seats. The party is advocating for a method that ensures fair representation for all states.
Parliamentary Dynamics
In Lok Sabha, similar protests erupted, with MPs raising concerns over various urgent issues, including internal security and funding for railway projects. The Budget session is set to continue until April 4, making it crucial for all voices to be heard.
