Omar Abdullah Rules Out Alliance with BJP, Lauds Manmohan Singh’s Efforts on Kashmir
JAMMU: In a significant statement, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified on Monday that there are no plans for an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite being part of the opposition INDIA bloc, he emphasized that the National Conference and BJP have vastly different political visions.
“We both have different ideologies. Our thoughts also do not align… If we talk about J&K, our approach is vastly different,” Abdullah told reporters outside the assembly ahead of the budget session. He reiterated that maintaining cordial ties with the Centre should not be misconstrued as political alignment with the BJP.
Praise for Manmohan Singh
During his address in the assembly, Abdullah expressed admiration for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, stating that India and Pakistan were on the verge of resolving the Kashmir issue during his tenure. “I don’t think I will ever see it happening again in my lifetime,” he remarked, acknowledging Singh’s efforts to keep the dialogue process alive.
Abdullah highlighted Singh’s initiatives during the turbulent times of 2010 in J&K, where he established working groups to address the grievances of the people. He also commended Singh’s role in settling the Kashmiri Pandit community at the Jagti Township and his contributions to India’s economic growth.
Commitment to Statehood
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in his address, echoed the government’s commitment to restoring statehood and engaging with stakeholders to ensure peace and stability. He noted that the current budget, the first in over seven years presented by an elected government in J&K, reflects the aspirations of the masses.
In a departure from previous years, the budget session saw minimal disruptions, underscoring the importance of the dialogue and governance process in the region.
