Official Urges PM Shehbaz Sharif to Address Pakistan Cricket Team’s Champions Trophy Failure

Call for Accountability: Pakistan’s Cricket Performance Under Scrutiny

A senior Pakistani government official plans to request Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address the national cricket team’s disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Rana Sanaullah, the PM’s advisor on Political and Public Affairs, has expressed concerns regarding the management and financial transparency of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
During an interview, Sanaullah stated, “The PCB is an independent institution, and they have acted as they please. However, I will urge the Prime Minister to discuss this in the Cabinet and Parliament.” The need for accountability comes after Pakistan’s campaign in the tournament ended in disappointment, featuring heavy defeats to New Zealand and arch-rivals India, culminating in an abandoned final group match against Bangladesh due to rain.

Demand for Transparency in PCB Spending

Sanaullah emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the PCB’s expenditures, particularly concerning player contracts and mentorship roles. He noted, “The money spent at the PCB should be brought before Parliament. Mentors are being paid five million rupees, yet some admit they don’t even know their responsibilities. This misuse of funds needs scrutiny.”
Moreover, he criticized the state of grassroots cricket in Pakistan, highlighting that while the PCB allocates substantial funds to officials and players, the infrastructure for club and district-level cricket remains neglected. “If you compare PCB’s perks and privileges to the rest of Pakistan, you’d think it’s a European nation. The Prime Minister will take notice of this,” he added.

Call for Reforms and Stability

Sanaullah’s remarks underline the urgent need for reforms within the PCB, advocating for a structured cricket board similar to those in other leading cricketing nations. As discussions are set to unfold in Parliament and the Federal Cabinet, the future of Pakistani cricket hangs in the balance.
