NHAI Prepares DPRs for New Roads to Ease Delhi Traffic Flow
NEW DELHI: With the BJP’s infrastructure push upon returning to power in the Delhi government, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for three new roads designed to alleviate traffic congestion on major arterial routes. Initially estimated at around Rs 9,100 crore, the exact cost will be confirmed following the finalization of the DPRs.
New Link Road to Connect Major Expressways
The first project involves a new link road of approximately 20 km, connecting the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) via the KMP expressway to the Delhi-Katra expressway. This will facilitate direct and seamless connectivity for vehicles arriving from Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab to the Delhi-Mumbai expressway and Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. The rough estimate for this venture stands at Rs 2,500 crore, following proposals submitted by seven BJP MPs from Delhi just prior to the assembly elections.
Smooth Travel for Rajasthan and Haryana Vehicles
The second project proposes a 17-km link from UER-II (near Alipur) to Tronica City, connecting to the under-construction Delhi-Dehradun expressway. This new road aims to ease travel for vehicles coming from Rajasthan and Haryana to Dehradun, reducing vehicle load on the Ring Road.
Bypass for East Delhi
The third major initiative will create a 35 km corridor linking the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway with Noida, ensuring uninterrupted travel for residents of north, north-west, and south-west Delhi.
Comprehensive Planning for Mobility
Officials emphasize that while these new road projects are a priority, comprehensive planning for mobility is essential, advocating for enhanced mass transport systems across the National Capital Region (NCR). As roads have limitations in accommodating vehicles, a multi-faceted approach will better serve the growing transportation needs of the region.
