NCRB 2023 Report Delay: Data Validation in Final Stage, Says Home Ministry

NCRB Report for 2023: What You Need to Know

In a recent update, the Union Home Ministry revealed that the much-anticipated annual publication of accident, suicide, and crime data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2023 is still pending. The Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, informed the Rajya Sabha that data validation for the report is currently in its final stages.

The NCRB has been consistently publishing key reports, including ‘Crime in India’ (CII), ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India’ (ADSI), and ‘Prison Statistics India’ (PSI). These reports collect data annually, with the data collection process commencing only after the end of the respective calendar year.

Kumar stated that data is sourced from 89 centers, including 36 states and Union Territories, along with 53 metropolitan cities. While the 2022 report has been released, the 2023 report is delayed due to extensive verification and validation processes. This thorough checking ensures the accuracy of the data reported by states and UTs. Any discrepancies are referred back for revalidation.

Typically, the NCRB publishes its reports by October. This year, however, the delay has raised eyebrows. Additionally, the Ministry of Road Transport has not yet released the ‘Accidents in India’ report for 2023, as they reconcile police data with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
