Mumbai’s Air Pollution Crisis: A Call for Action
Mumbai experienced unprecedented air pollution levels this week, despite ongoing efforts to improve air quality. A dense fog persisted over the city, leading to health concerns amongst its residents. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 188, categorizing the air quality as ‘moderate’. In comparison, neighboring Thane had an AQI of 150, while Navi Mumbai stood at 131.
Health Implications of Poor Air Quality
The air quality in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region poses significant health risks, particularly to individuals suffering from respiratory issues, heart diseases, and asthma. With smog lingering longer than usual, residents are increasingly concerned about the impact on their health and daily lives.
Contributors to Air Pollution
Reports suggest that the ongoing construction boom in the city, with around 11,000 projects underway, is a major contributor to the declining air quality. Coupled with heavy traffic congestion and emissions from over 1.2 million private vehicles, the situation has reached alarming levels.
Efforts to Mitigate Pollution
In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has implemented several measures including the deployment of anti-smog guns and 100 water tankers to control the dust from construction activities. Additionally, truck-mounted fog mist canons are being used twice daily across 24 administrative divisions to combat air pollution.
