Mumbai Boat Accident: 15 Dead in Collision Between Navy Vessel and Ferry

Mumbai Boat Accident: A Tragic Collision

The catastrophic collision on December 18 between an Indian Navy speedboat and the passenger ferry Neel Kamal off the coast of Mumbai has left the city in mourning. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, raising serious concerns about maritime safety in one of India’s busiest ports.

Technical Malfunction Under Investigation

Preliminary investigations suggest that a technical malfunction may have played a significant role in this maritime disaster. According to NDTV, the steering assembly and throttle quadrant of the Indian Navy vessel were reported to be faulty. The speedboat was undergoing engine trials at high speed when it collided with the ferry, which was carrying over 100 passengers en route to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination.

Survivors’ Accounts and Rescue Operations

Survivors from the naval vessel indicated that the crew was aware of the malfunction prior to the collision. Videos from the scene show desperate attempts to steer away from the ferry, but the Navy boat was unable to turn sharply enough to avoid impact. Following the tragic incident, naval helicopters and Coast Guard vessels were deployed for search and rescue operations.

Casualties and Overloading Concerns

Out of the 113 individuals aboard both vessels, 15 lost their lives, while 98 others were successfully rescued. Notably, the Neel Kamal was licensed to carry a maximum of 84 passengers and six crew members, indicating it was overloaded at the time of the accident.

Legal Actions and Future Steps

In response, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has canceled the ferry’s license and initiated an investigation. A case has been registered against the driver of the Indian Navy craft for negligence and endangering public safety. The Navy vessel is currently in custody as authorities continue their investigation into this devastating maritime accident.
