Mumbai Authorities Halt Construction to Combat Air Pollution
Air quality concerns have reached a critical point in Mumbai, prompting local authorities to take decisive action. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) consistently hovering in the ‘moderate’ category, construction work is being suspended in areas like Byculla and Borivali East due to alarming pollution levels.
Understanding the Situation
According to Bhushan Gagrani, the chief of the Mumbai civic body, “In all areas of Mumbai where the AQI index surpasses the 200 mark, we will stop work at all construction sites under the GRAP-IV norms.” This means that once the AQI breaches the 200 threshold, immediate cessation of work occurs without prior notice to developers. Recent data from the Central Pollution Control Board indicated an AQI of 121 for Mumbai and 101 for Navi Mumbai, while Thane recorded a slightly better AQI of 150.
Health Implications
It’s essential to understand the implications of these air quality levels. An AQI between 201 and 300 is categorized as ‘poor’ and can cause breathing discomfort, particularly for individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or heart disease. The ongoing pollution crisis has made it necessary for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to halt construction activities and issue strict guidelines to minimize further deterioration of air quality.
Measures Taken
To combat rising pollution levels, the BMC has implemented several measures, including the deployment of mist cannons and water tankers to wash roads. The civic body is actively spraying water using truck-mounted fog mist cannons and has sent out 100 water tankers to control dust from construction activities. Additionally, e-sweeper machines are being used to clean roads and footpaths.
In a bid to further curb pollution, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has issued notices to over 500 ready-mix concrete plants in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, mandating the erection of sheds to cover the entire plant area.
