Mohammed Shami Returns to India’s T20I Squad Against England
Mumbai: In an exciting development for Indian cricket, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made his much-anticipated return to the squad for the T20I series against England after a 14-month hiatus due to a knee injury. The series kicks off on January 22 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, faced a long recovery period following surgery for an ankle injury and subsequent knee complications. His comeback is expected to strengthen India’s pace attack, especially with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj rested for the series.
Key Changes in the Squad
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has also appointed Axar Patel as vice-captain, marking his first leadership role in any format for India. Notably, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, opener Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been rested to ensure they recover fully from a demanding series in Australia.
In-form wicketkeepers Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel have been included in the squad. Samson has been making headlines with his explosive batting, recently becoming the first Indian to score consecutive centuries in T20 Internationals.
Looking Ahead
With Bumrah’s injury concerns and Shami’s comeback, the series against England is crucial for India’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series and the ICC Champions Trophy in February. The Indian team will be looking to capitalize on this blend of experience and fresh talent as they gear up for the challenges ahead.
