Mohammed Shami Returns to India’s T20I Squad Ahead of England Series
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami is back in India’s T20I squad for the five-match series against England, starting January 22 in Kolkata. This marks a significant comeback for Shami, who has been out of action for over a year following heel surgery.
Aakash Chopra, former Indian cricketer, emphasized the importance of Shami’s return as India gears up for the ICC Champions Trophy later this year. On his YouTube channel, Chopra stated, “Mohammed Shami is back. He is fit. The preparation for the Champions Trophy is on. If he remains fit and in form, he could be going to Dubai for the Champions Trophy.”
Shami’s Fitness and Impact
Shami, who missed India’s recent 3-1 Test series loss in Australia, has been working hard to regain his match fitness through domestic cricket. His inclusion in the squad showcases the selectors’ confidence in his readiness for international competition. However, Chopra cautioned, “It will be interesting to see how his fitness holds up, as the workload and pressure of international cricket are very different from any other cricket.”
The series also raises concerns about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, who is recovering from an injury. Chopra expressed the need for Shami’s presence in the squad, stating, “It’s becoming difficult for Bumrah to spearhead the attack alone. That’s why we need Shami fit, playing, and in form.”
India’s T20 Squad for the England Series
With Suryakumar Yadav leading the squad and Axar Patel as vice-captain, Shami’s return is anticipated to strengthen the bowling lineup, particularly given Bumrah’s uncertain availability for the Champions Trophy.
