Ministry of Civil Aviation Urges Airlines to Enhance Communication
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has called on airline operators to improve their communication regarding potential delays or cancellations, particularly during the challenging winter months filled with fog and adverse weather conditions. This directive comes amid increasing incidents of passenger frustration, as reported by CNBC-TV-18.
Proactive Communication is Key
In a bid to ensure a smoother travel experience, the ministry has convened discussions with airlines, airport authorities, and other stakeholders. The goal is to devise effective strategies for managing air travel operations during low-visibility conditions. Enhanced communication will play a pivotal role in reducing passenger anxiety and improving overall satisfaction.
Timely Action for Delays
Additionally, the Ministry has mandated that airlines take swift action if delays exceed three hours. In such cases, airlines are encouraged to cancel flights to prevent prolonged wait times for passengers. Moreover, to enhance comfort, passengers should not be kept aboard delayed aircraft for more than 90 minutes.
Improving Passenger Services
To further support travelers, the Ministry has recommended the installation of LED screens at key locations in airports. These screens will provide real-time updates on visibility conditions, enabling passengers to stay informed about significant weather changes.
In an effort to enhance ground operations, GMR-owned airports are increasing the number of “Follow-Me” vehicles to assist pilots during low-visibility scenarios. This initiative aims to ensure safe and efficient movement on airport taxiways and aprons.
Personnel and Technology Upgrades
The Ministry has also emphasized the importance of having adequately trained personnel and compliant aircraft capable of operating in low-visibility conditions. Collaboration with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is underway to implement the Advanced Weather Observation System (AWOS) at major fog-affected airports, including Delhi Airport.
