Mysuru Police Take Action Against Hate Speech
MYSURU: In a significant development, Karnataka Police arrested a maulvi, Mufti Mustaq Maqbooli, for allegedly inciting violence with a provocative speech. This speech reportedly led to a mob attack on the Udayagiri police station on February 10, injuring several police personnel and damaging official vehicles.
Details of the Incident
City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar confirmed the arrest, stating that the maulvi was produced before a local court and remanded in judicial custody. He faces serious charges, including delivering hate speech and outraging religious feelings under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Sources indicate that Maqbooli’s speech was in response to a controversial social media post targeting a specific religious community, which arose following the Delhi assembly election results. His inflammatory remarks led to a large crowd gathering outside the police station, resulting in stone-pelting and demands for action against the individual who made the offensive post.
Legal Actions and Community Response
In the aftermath, police have registered cases against approximately 1,000 individuals for rioting, unlawful assembly, and stone-pelting, with 17 arrests made so far. Further, four youths were detained for attacking police vehicles, including that of the DCP (traffic and crime), S Janhavi.
Amid this turmoil, police have denied permission for proposed processions aimed at condemning the attack on the police station. The Dalit Mahasabha and Rashtra Suraksha Janandolana Samithi had sought permission for awareness rallies and marches scheduled for February 24.
