Abu Azmi’s suspension came after Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil moved a motion against him in the Assembly. The Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar MLA faced backlash for stating that Aurangzeb was not a “cruel administrator” and even claimed he built “many temples,” as reported by PTI.

Azmi further elaborated that the historical conflict between Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was primarily about state administration rather than a Hindu-Muslim divide. His comments were met with severe criticism, leading to calls for accountability.
Response and Apology
In a video posted on X, Azmi stated, “My words have been twisted. I have said what historians and writers have claimed about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Ali.” He expressed willingness to retract his statements and apologize if they had hurt anyone’s sentiments. Azmi emphasized that he did not intend to demean any historical figures, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj.

Azmi accused political opponents of politicizing the issue, stating that the suspension was detrimental to the people of Maharashtra, particularly as it affected the budget session. “Closing the budget session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly because of this is causing harm to the people of Maharashtra,” he remarked.
Legal Actions
A zero FIR has been registered against Azmi at the Naupada Police Station in Thane, later transferred to the Marine Drive police station in Mumbai, following a complaint from Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske.
As the political storm continues, the BJP has seized upon Azmi’s remarks, questioning members of the INDIA bloc about their intentions to glorify historical figures like Aurangzeb.
