Financial Stress from the Ladki Bahin Scheme
Pune: Maharashtra’s Minister for Minorities, Dattatray Bharne, has recently brought attention to the “financial stress” the state government is facing due to the Ladki Bahin scheme. This announcement comes after Shiv Sena MLA Ramdas Kadam expressed similar concerns regarding the welfare measure that provides Rs 1500 every month to eligible women aged between 21 and 65.
Budget Cuts Amid Rising Debt
In light of the increasing state debt, the Mahayuti government’s budget slashed the allocation for this scheme by approximately Rs 10,000 crore. Launched in July last year, the scheme was initially a part of the governing allies’ promises during the assembly elections, with plans to raise the monthly payout to Rs 2100.
Minister’s Urgent Call to Action
At an event in Indapur, Minister Bharne candidly admitted, “One must accept there is some financial stress on the government treasury due to the Ladki Bahin scheme.” He urged supporters to submit fewer letters of demand this year, indicating the pressing need for financial prudence.
