Maharashtra Government Forms SIT to Investigate Alleged Political Conspiracy
The Maharashtra government has recently established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate claims of a conspiracy orchestrated by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to a Government Resolution issued by the state Home Department, the SIT will be helmed by Mumbai’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Satyanarayan Chaudhary. Fadnavis, who resumed office for a third term following the Mahayuti coalition’s victory in November 2024, was previously the Leader of Opposition during the MVA rule from November 2019 to June 2022. In a twist of fate, Shinde, who served as a minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led cabinet, later rebelled and formed a government with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The SIT’s formation stems from claims made by BJP leader Pravin Darekar in the Maharashtra Legislative Council during the winter session in December 2024. Darekar alleged a conspiracy to falsely implicate Fadnavis and Shinde, asserting that he possesses audio recordings as evidence of this plot.
SIT’s Mandate and Timeline
The four-member SIT comprises Deputy Inspector General Rajiv Jain from the State Reserve Police Force, Deputy Commissioner of Police Navnath Dhavle, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Adikrao Pol, all based in Mumbai. This team has been directed to complete its investigation within 30 days, promising a swift resolution to these serious allegations.
