Maharashtra Assembly Unanimously Suspends MLA Abu Asim Azmi
MUMBAI: In a significant political move, the Maharashtra Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to suspend Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi for the duration of the budget session. This decision follows his remarks eulogising the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in relation to the film Chhava, which depicts the conflict between Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb.
Reactions to the Suspension
Azmi responded to his suspension by stating, “I was not given an opportunity to present my side. I have only said the same thing that professors and academics have said about Aurangzeb. I have never said anything against the state’s icons.” His comments have ignited a political storm, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath questioning the Samajwadi Party’s stance on Azmi’s views.
Political Fallout
In the legislative council, Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve of Shiv Sena (UBT) inquired why Azmi was not jailed for his remarks, to which Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded that the MLA would be “100 percent” put in jail. State Minister Chandrakant Patil, who moved the resolution for suspension, described Azmi’s statements as divisive and disrespectful to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Calls for Further Action
While some Congress leaders supported Azmi’s suspension, they called for action against others who have made derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray even demanded a permanent suspension for Azmi, emphasizing the need for accountability in the assembly.
