Madan Lal Urges Rohit Sharma to Reflect on His Form and Team Position

Rohit Sharma’s Form: Madan Lal Weighs In on Team Dynamics

Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has entered the conversation about Rohit Sharma’s recent struggles with form, suggesting a collaborative discussion between the team management and the coach. With Rohit’s performance drawing scrutiny, Lal emphasizes that the ultimate decision regarding his place in the team rests with the captain himself.
Rohit joined the Indian team following their victory in the first Test in Perth. However, his subsequent performances have been disappointing, scoring only 31 runs in his last matches, resulting in an average of just 6.20. This slump has seen his overall Test average plummet to 10.93 over the last nine matches, igniting speculation about his future in the squad.
“Rohit is a captain. As team management, as a coach, they can sit down and sort things out. What’s the problem when you’re playing for the country? The coach doesn’t have that much power to just drop someone. They’ll have to consult, right? The team isn’t formed by the captain alone, is it? The coach and captain together form the team, right?” Madan Lal stated.
Adding to the uncertainty, India’s coach Gautam Gambhir has refrained from confirming Rohit’s selection for the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney, indicating that a decision would depend on pitch conditions on match day.
Madan Lal believes Rohit should take a moment for self-reflection. He suggests that if Rohit feels ineffective, he should consider stepping aside to allow others a chance. Furthermore, he points out the frequent changes in Rohit’s batting position as a concern. “Rohit has to make a decision—whether to play or not to play. If he believes he can do the job and regain his form, that’s good. It’s about how you feel, your confidence. If he feels that he’s not pulling his weight, he can always step aside and give a chance to others,” Lal advised.
