Kerala’s Shirtless Temple Tradition Sparks Fresh Debate Over Caste and Dress Code

Kerala’s Shirtless Tradition: A Clash of Reform and Tradition

The year was 1982, and a confrontation erupted in the dining hall of the Guruvayur temple. A sacred meal, known as ‘Brahmin Oottu,’ was at the center of a dispute when Swami Ananda Theerthan, a disciple of the renowned social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, refused to remove his upper garment. This act of defiance against caste discrimination sparked a series of events that led to the eventual abolition of the exclusionary practice.
Fast forward four decades, and the call by Satchidananda Swamy, head of the Sivagiri mutt, to abolish the shirtless tradition has reignited the debate over dress codes in temples. During the annual Sivagiri pilgrimage, he emphasized that such practices are remnants of casteism and do not reflect true spirituality.
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded cautiously, advocating for consensus among temple stakeholders before making any changes. This measured approach is rooted in the state’s recent challenges regarding temple entry regulations, particularly concerning women at the Sabarimala temple.
Historian M G Sasibhooshan noted that while the shirtless dress code might have originated to maintain decorum in temples, it remains a unique tradition in Kerala and a few other temples. The broader Indian context generally allows for more relaxed dress regulations.
The discourse surrounding this issue has sparked varied opinions. The Nair Service Society has opposed any alterations to temple traditions, while others, like Vellappally Natesan from the SNDP Yogam, argue for unity over divisive practices.
Ultimately, while the debate continues, the push for reform highlights a significant moment in Kerala’s cultural landscape, as the quest for inclusivity meets the weight of historical customs.
