Kerala’s Government Approves Rehabilitation Project for Wayanad Landslide Survivors
The Kerala government has initiated a significant rehabilitation project for the survivors of the catastrophic Wayanad landslides, which claimed over 200 lives in July 2024. Recognized by the Central government as a disaster of “severe nature,” the plan aims to establish two townships equipped with essential amenities to support the affected communities.
Location and Land Allocation
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has revealed that the new townships will be constructed at Elstone Estate and Nedumpala Estate. To accommodate the displaced residents, 5% of the land will be allocated in the Elstone tea estate, while 10% will be designated in the Nedumbala estate. The Chief Minister emphasized the challenge of finding suitable land for rehabilitation, highlighting that restoring livelihoods is a crucial aspect of the project.
Comprehensive Amenities for Survivors
The townships are set to include basic amenities such as markets, educational institutions, hospitals, and recreational centers. Vijayan stated that the final list of beneficiaries would be finalized by January 25, ensuring that the needs of the survivors are prioritized.
Timely Implementation and Livelihood Support
Vijayan assured that the developmental projects, located in Kalpetta and Kottappady, would be executed within a specified timeline. He clarified that rehabilitation involves more than just housing; it encompasses comprehensive efforts to provide sustainable livelihoods. A microplan survey will identify opportunities in agriculture, animal husbandry, and micro-entrepreneurship, allowing survivors to rebuild their lives.
Support for Survivors Choosing Independence
For those survivors who prefer to stay outside the townships, the government has proposed a compensation of ₹15 lakh each. A three-tier system will oversee the implementation of the project, with a panel led by the Chief Minister to ensure transparency and efficiency.
This initiative not only aims to restore the lives of Wayanad landslide survivors but also represents a commitment to rebuilding communities with dignity and support. For more updates on social initiatives and community support, visit Looffers.com.
