New Delhi: Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev, now the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), is advocating for the recognition of hard work across all sports, emphasizing that athletes in disciplines beyond cricket deserve just as much acknowledgment. During a recent PGTI press conference, he stated, “Cricket is not the only thing in the world. Every other sportsperson also works very hard.”
Exciting Developments in the 2025 PGTI Schedule
Kapil Dev announced the first half of the 2025 PGTI schedule, which includes 11 tournaments over 11 consecutive weeks and a total prize pool of Rs 15.66 crore, excluding the Indian Open. The season kicks off with the PGTI Players Championship in Kolkata on February 11, followed by notable events such as the Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton Invitational.
Among the thrilling additions to the calendar are the Chhattisgarh Open Golf Championship, PGTI Invitational, Indorama Open Golf Championship, and Calance Open, each with significant prize money ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore.
Golf: An Affordable Sport?
Addressing the common perception that golf is an expensive sport, Kapil Dev asserted, “Golf is not more expensive than cricket. If you invest in a set of clubs and a ball, it can actually be much cheaper than playing cricket.”
The Revival of PGTI’s Second-Tier Tour
Another significant announcement was the revival of PGTI’s second-tier tour, now branded as PGTI NexGen events, after a five-year break. The 2025 schedule will feature three NexGen tournaments, each boasting a prize purse of Rs 20 lakh.
With the total prize purse for the first half of the 2025 season increasing by Rs 4.5 crore from 2024, Kapil’s vision is clear: to provide more opportunities for aspiring golfers.
