Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Faces Boycott in Punjab
Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated political drama, Emergency, premiered in theaters on Friday but encountered significant backlash in Punjab. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and various Sikh organizations took to the streets, protesting against the film, claiming it misrepresents the Sikh community.
Protests Rock Film Release
Protesters gathered outside cinemas in cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Patiala, holding black flags and signs reading “Boycott Emergency” and “Ban Emergency.” They demanded an immediate cessation of screenings, leading to most cinemas in Punjab pulling the film from their schedules amid security concerns.
SGPC’s Concerns
SGPC spokesperson Partap Singh expressed his discontent, stating, “The movie has been made to disturb the peace of Punjab.” Rajinder Singh Tohra, another SGPC member, added that the film insults the entire Sikh community and would not be allowed to be shown anywhere in the state.
Kangana’s Response
In response to the uproar, Ranaut labeled the protests as “harassment of art and the artist,” asserting that it’s a propaganda attempt to tarnish her image. She emphasized her respect for all religions and her familiarity with Sikh traditions.
