Verbal Clash in Lok Sabha Over MNREGA Funds
NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee engaged in a heated exchange with treasury bench members in Lok Sabha regarding the halt of MNREGA funds for West Bengal. During the Question Hour, Banerjee articulated that the benefits of the MNREGA scheme are being withheld from the state.
Banerjee stated, “The ministry claims that 25 lakh cases of fraud have been detected. We urge immediate investigation and action against the guilty, but how can you deny funds to 10 crore people based on these allegations?” He further questioned the inaction on corruption, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Confrontation with Union Ministers
The Sreerampur MP did not hold back in his criticism of Union Minister Giriraj Singh, challenging his behavior as a central minister. This remark provoked a strong reaction from treasury members, prompting objections from Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Speaker Om Birla intervened, reminding members to maintain decorum and address the chair respectfully.
Government’s Response
In response to the ongoing debate, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman alleged that 25 lakh fake job cards in MNREGA had been “looted” by TMC cadres. She emphasized the need for strict investigations into these claims. Additionally, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured that stringent actions would be taken against any misuse of funds.
As discussions continue, the focus remains on ensuring that the welfare schemes reach the intended beneficiaries without hindrance.
