Joe Root Returns to England’s ODI Squad Against India
Former England captain Joe Root is set to make his much-anticipated return to the ODI format during the opening game against India in Nagpur, marking his first appearance in this format since the 2023 World Cup. His inclusion is expected to significantly strengthen England’s middle-order batting, particularly in spin-friendly conditions, as the team gears up for the ICC Champions Trophy commencing on February 19.
Excitement Surrounding Root’s Comeback
Expressing his enthusiasm, Root stated, “Very excited, it’s great being back involved. It’s obviously been a while so to be around the group, play with a few lads who I have not seen in a while is very exciting and of course what a great venue to get back to.” This excitement comes as Root joins a squad led by Jos Buttler, who is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 1-4 loss in the recent T20I series against India.
Brendon McCullum’s New Era
This series also marks the first ODI tour for coach Brendon McCullum since his promotion to all-format coach. Root praised McCullum’s approach, saying, “The way he looks at the game fits nicely with how the team sets up.” With a blend of experience and youth in the squad, Root believes there’s great potential moving forward.
Recent Performance Boosts Confidence
Root joins the ODI squad following a successful stint with Paarl Royals in the SA20 tournament, where he scored 279 runs, including two fifties, and took five wickets with his off-spin. As the most senior batter, he looks forward to sharing his experience with the younger players in the team.
England’s Playing XI
The England playing XI for the match includes: Phil Salt (wk), Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Saqib Mahmood.
