From Battling Cancer to Winning Races: The Inspiring Comeback of Jockey Nirmal Jodha
Mumbai: Two years ago, jockey Nirmal Jodha was in a fight for his life. This past Sunday, he showcased his incredible resilience by winning both his races at the prestigious Mahalaxmi Racecourse. His remarkable comeback saw him pilot the longshot Absolute Gorgeous to victory at The Star Shine Trophy.
At 43, Jodha’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with third-stage colon cancer in January 2023, he faced life-threatening challenges. “I was completely blank. My first thought was – what will happen to my widowed mother, my wife, and my three-year-old son?” he shared reflecting on his diagnosis.
A Grueling Battle
Thanks to the support of the Jockeys’ Association of India and fellow riders, Jodha was referred to Dr. Mehli Nazir at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, where he underwent surgery. Following this, he faced a grueling regimen of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation, causing his weight to plummet to just 27 kg. Fortunately, his training as a jockey helped him manage his strict dietary needs.
The Road to Recovery
Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha, Nirmal’s employer, played a pivotal role in his recovery. “I asked him to keep coming to the stables just to get him out of the house,” he explained. Nirmal started with light duties, gradually regaining his strength and confidence.
As the Mumbai racing season commenced, he secured several rides that bolstered his determination. With the trust of trainer P S Chouhan, he was given the reins of Absolute Gorgeous. “I told him to take a good jump and do his best in the homestretch,” said Chouhan, and Jodha did not disappoint.
