India’s Leap into Space: The SpaDeX Mission
NEW DELHI: In a monumental stride towards establishing India’s own space station and embarking on interplanetary missions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the SpaDeX mission on December 30 at 9:58 PM from Sriharikota using the PSLV-C60 rocket.
What is SpaDeX?
The SpaDeX mission aims to develop and demonstrate essential docking technologies, positioning India as the fourth country globally to master space docking. This technology is crucial for future missions, including lunar landings and the construction of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
Mission Details
The mission involves two small spacecraft, Target and Chaser, each weighing approximately 220 kg. Launched into a 470 km circular orbit, these spacecraft will gradually approach each other to dock successfully. After docking, power transfer between the two will be demonstrated before they undock to commence their operational tasks.
Payloads and Collaborations
Besides the docking demonstration, the PSLV-C60’s fourth stage will carry 24 payloads, including contributions from ISRO and various non-government entities, such as academic institutions and startups.
