Isro’s Space Docking Experiment: Paving the Way for Future Human Spaceflight

ISRO’s SpaDeX Mission: A Leap Towards Human Spaceflight

BENGALURU: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made significant strides in space exploration with its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), initiated in 2017. Designed to complement future human spaceflight missions, SpaDeX has taken great care in its mission parameters, ensuring safety during potential abort scenarios by avoiding populated areas.
URSC director M. Sankaran shared, “The 475-km orbit sits slightly above the typical human presence orbit of 370 km – 450 km, and the inclination was selected to ensure coverage of most global landmasses while considering safety factors.”

Robust Tracking Network

To track SpaDeX effectively, ISRO deployed an extensive network of tracking stations, utilizing both domestic and international resources. While ISRO has 18 tracking stations, 24 additional stations assisted in monitoring the mission. Former ISRO chairman S. Somanath emphasized the importance of this network, stating, “This is like a rehearsal for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission.”

Future Docking Attempts

Following the successful docking, the mission team is currently assessing the operation’s success before proceeding with the undocking procedure. Sankaran noted, “Additional docking attempts may be considered based on remaining fuel and verification requirements.” The satellites are equipped with imaging and radiation monitoring payloads, vital for future human spaceflights.
This mission not only demonstrates advanced technological capabilities but also paves the way for smaller, more efficient satellites in future explorations.
