Israel Urges India to Classify Hamas as a Terror Organization Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict

Israel’s Push for Hamas Designation: A Diplomatic Balancing Act

NEW DELHI: As Israel intensifies its military operations in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, it is actively urging India to designate the militant group as a terrorist organization. This call has gained momentum following the presence of several Hamas leaders in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) during “Kashmir Solidarity Day” last month.

The gathering included members from other UN-proscribed terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), marking a significant moment in international relations. Reports indicate that Israel has discussed this issue with Indian authorities, highlighting the growing concern over the activities of Hamas and its allies.

India’s Position on Hamas

Despite its strong condemnation of the October 7, 2023 terror attacks on Israel, India has yet to officially ban Hamas, unlike several other countries, including the United States and the European Union, which have classified the group as a terrorist organization. Previously, in 2023, Israel had banned the Pakistan-based LeT for its involvement in the Mumbai attacks, with the then Israeli ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, expressing hope that India would follow suit regarding Hamas.

The Indian Parliament has raised questions about the potential ban, to which the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the designation of organizations as terrorist entities is governed by the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and decisions are made by relevant government departments.

India’s Diplomatic Balancing Act

In a delicate diplomatic balancing act, India continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism while also maintaining its longstanding ties with the Palestinian people. India advocates for a negotiated two-state solution and supports Palestine’s membership in the United Nations, emphasizing the need for a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine to coexist peacefully with Israel.
