IPL 2025: Expanded Player Replacement Policy Explained

Understanding the Expanded Player Replacement Policy in IPL 2025

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has made significant changes to its player replacement policy for the 2025 season. Teams can now replace players who suffer season-ending injuries or illnesses until the 12th league fixture. This expansion allows franchises to strategize better throughout the two-month-long season, which runs from March 22 to May 25.

The Regulation Changes

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has adapted its regulations, extending the replacement window from the previous limit of seven matches. The new rule emphasizes that a replacement player must be listed in the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) for that season and their league fee should meet or exceed their self-declared reserve price.

Eligibility Criteria for Replacement Players

To qualify as a replacement player:
– The player must be on the RAPP list.
– The league fee must not be less than their declared reserve price.
– Bowlers listed as net bowlers by a franchise can also be selected by other teams.
The compensation for the replacement player is capped at the original player’s league fee. Notably, the league fee for the replacement player will not count against the franchise’s salary cap for that season.

Injury and Illness Protocol

A player can be replaced if:
1. The injury or illness occurs before or during the 12th League Match.
2. A BCCI-nominated doctor confirms that the condition is season-ending.
3. The player would have been available for the remaining matches had they not been injured.
Once replaced, the original player cannot participate in any matches for the franchise for the remainder of the season.

Recent Replacements

Several teams have already utilized this expanded policy:
– Kolkata Knight Riders: Chetan Sakariya for Umran Malik
– Mumbai Indians: Mujeeb-ur-Rahman for Allah Ghazanfar
– Sunrisers Hyderabad: Wiaan Mulder for Brydon Carse
