Transforming Indian Railways: A Leap Towards Modernization

The Ministry of Finance has reiterated its commitment to transforming Indian Railways through ambitious projects such as the manufacturing of energy-efficient Vande Bharat trains and the implementation of Kavach, a world-class indigenous safety technology.
Energy-Efficient Vande Bharat Trains
With 68 operational Vande Bharat trains already running, Indian Railways is in the process of selecting technology partners to indigenously manufacture energy-efficient Vande Bharat trains in India. This initiative aligns with the 2022-23 budget announcements aimed at boosting India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities. The goal is to develop and manufacture 400 next-generation Vande Bharat trains over the next three years, enhancing energy efficiency and passenger comfort.
Indigenous Manufacturing and Self-Reliance
The focus on indigenous manufacturing is a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in the railway sector. Currently, 68 Vande Bharat Express trains are operational across 15 zones, offering fast and comfortable travel. The procurement process for 200 train sets has been finalized, alongside plans for additional lightweight aluminum-bodied train sets.
Kavach Technology for Enhanced Safety
In addition to modernizing rolling stock, the deployment of Kavach technology enhances railway safety and capacity. Kavach, an indigenously developed advanced system, is designed to prevent collisions and ensure efficient train operations. As of October 2024, Kavach has been deployed over 1,548 route kilometers across South Central Railway and North Central Railway, with further work underway for an additional 3,000 Rkm on high-priority routes.
