India Summons Bangladesh Envoy Amid Rising Tensions
NEW DELHI: In a significant diplomatic move, India has summoned the acting high commissioner of Bangladesh, Nurul Islam, to express its concerns regarding the ongoing negativity in bilateral relations. This follows the destruction of the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, a move that India has condemned.
Concerns Over Negative Portrayal
The Indian government has voiced its reservations about the continued efforts by leaders in Dhaka to create a hostile atmosphere, describing such actions as “regrettable.” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that conflating the remarks of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the official stance of the Indian government is unhelpful for fostering positive relations.
Seeking a Constructive Relationship
India has reiterated its desire for a constructive and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh, a sentiment echoed in recent high-level meetings. “It is regrettable that regular statements from Bangladeshi authorities portray India negatively, holding us responsible for internal governance issues,” Jaiswal stated, underscoring the need for reciprocity from Bangladesh.
Security of Diplomatic Premises
In light of the recent events, Indian officials have also pointed out that the safety of diplomatic premises lies with the host government. Misri stated, “I have no doubt that the Bangladesh authorities are fully aware of their responsibilities.”
