India’s Commitment to Labour Welfare: Highlights from the ILO Governing Body Meeting

New Delhi [India], March 16 (ANI): In a significant move for global labour welfare, Labour Secretary Sumita Dawra recently led the Indian delegation at the 353rd Governing Body meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, taking place from March 10 to March 20, 2025.

Showcasing India’s Achievements

The Indian delegation made several impactful interventions, highlighting the nation’s strides in promoting labour welfare, social justice, and quality employment generation. The meeting serves as a platform for representatives from governments, workers, and employers to engage in crucial discussions about the future of work.

Support for Global Initiatives

India expressed its unwavering support for the upcoming UN-led Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar, aimed at reinforcing the social dimension of the 2030 Agenda. With social protection coverage doubled to 48.8%, India is setting an example to enhance global standards.

Flagship Programs Making a Difference

The delegation emphasized the significant impact of India’s flagship initiatives, including:

  • EPFO: 7.37 crore contributing members
  • ESIC: 14.4 crore beneficiaries
  • e-Shram Portal: 30.6 crore registered unorganized workers
  • PM Jan Arogya Yojana: 60 crore beneficiaries
  • Targeted PDS: Food security for 81.35 crore beneficiaries

Global Cooperation on Migration

As one of the largest countries of origin for migrant workers, India reiterated the need for well-managed, skills-based migration pathways. Support was extended for bilateral labour migration and social security agreements to protect the rights of migrant workers.

Future Collaborations with ILO

India is also looking forward to future collaborations with the ILO, focusing on living wages, the welfare of gig and platform workers, and ensuring decent work in value chains. These discussions are pivotal for shaping a sustainable and equitable workforce.
