India’s Commitment to Maldives: A Steadfast Partnership
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently emphasized India’s unwavering support for the Maldives, showcasing the depth of their bilateral ties. During a meeting with Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Jaishankar reaffirmed that India considers the Maldives a vital partner, encapsulating this sentiment with the phrase, “For us, you are a very concrete expression of our Neighbourhood First policy.”
Strengthening Ties Through Cooperation
Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security partnership established during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October last year. This recent meeting served as a platform to assess the progress of this cooperation. “We discussed our development cooperation and economic, security, fintech and people-to-people ties,” Jaishankar noted, marking a pivotal step in their collaborative journey.
High Impact Community Development Projects
In a move to further enhance relations, India and the Maldives signed agreements aimed at implementing the next phase of High Impact Community Development Projects. These initiatives are designed not only to boost the Maldives’ growth but also to solidify the bonds between the two nations. Jaishankar stated, “India will continue to be a steadfast supporter of Maldives’ progress and prosperity, in line with our Neighbourhood First policy and vision SAGAR.”
Digital Payment System and Economic Growth
Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Maldives’ Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. This agreement aims to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives, further emphasizing India’s role in the economic development of its neighbor.
Looking Ahead
Minister Khaleel expressed appreciation for India’s “unwavering” support and reiterated the commitment to strengthening their partnership. This mutual respect and cooperation underscore the significance of India’s Neighbourhood First policy, which aims to foster a peaceful and prosperous region.
