India’s Majestic Naval Combat Exercise: Tropex 2023
NEW DELHI: In a bold demonstration of maritime strength, India is conducting a massive naval combat exercise named Tropex (Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise) in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This comprehensive exercise involves 65 warships, nine submarines, and over 80 aircraft and helicopters, showcasing India’s commitment to operational preparedness.
Objectives and Participation
Tropex aims to validate the Navy’s core warfighting skills and ensure a synchronized response to preserve national maritime security. The exercise runs biennially, bringing together the Navy’s western and eastern fleets alongside substantial participation from the Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Coast Guard. According to Navy spokesperson Captain Vivek Madhwal, it integrates various facets of combat operations, including cyber warfare and live weapon firings.
Advanced Naval Assets Mobilized
The exercise features the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, guided-missile destroyers, and Kalvari-class submarines. The IAF contributes Sukhoi-30MKI and Jaguar fighters, while the Coast Guard joins with 10 ships and aircraft. This collaboration enhances jointness among the services, with over 600 Army troops participating.
Strategic Context
As China strengthens its naval presence in the IOR, deploying up to eight vessels at any time, India remains vigilant. The exercise serves as a crucial response to growing maritime collusiveness between China and Pakistan. Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi emphasized the need to tweak plans to counter any potential threats, signaling India’s readiness to address challenges in the region.
