India, EU Agree to Expand Collaboration in High-Technology, Green Energy and Trade Sectors

New Delhi, Feb 28 (PTI) – In a significant move towards strengthening global partnerships, India and the 27-nation European Union (EU) have agreed to enhance cooperation in high-technology sectors including semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), 6G, clean energy, and digital public infrastructure (DPI). This decision was reached during the second ministerial meeting of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), coinciding with European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to India.

Strengthening Ties through Technology

The TTC, established in 2022, aims to foster collaboration on critical technologies such as AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, and cybersecurity. This partnership marks the EU’s second technology collaboration after their agreement with the United States in June 2021.

Key Participants and Discussions

The Indian delegation comprised External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The EU was represented by Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, and Innovation Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva. Together, they highlighted their commitment to promoting global stability, economic security, and sustainable growth amidst changing geopolitical dynamics.

Focus on Digital Infrastructure and Semiconductors

Both sides acknowledged the importance of DPI in fostering open digital economies and agreed to collaborate on ensuring interoperability while safeguarding personal data and intellectual property rights. They also committed to joint research and development in semiconductor technologies, emphasizing the need for safe and secure AI systems.

Future Collaborations and Initiatives

India and the EU aim to bolster their semiconductor ecosystems, enhance technological capabilities, and ensure supply chain resilience. They plan to implement talent exchange programs to develop semiconductor skills among students and professionals.

As stated by Jaishankar, the meeting reflected progress in digital partnerships, clean energy initiatives, and resilient supply chains. The dialogue is expected to pave the way for new economic, trade, and technology linkages.
