India’s Concerns Over the Renewed Gaza Conflict
NEW DELHI: As the conflict in Gaza reignites after a two-month ceasefire, India has expressed deep concerns regarding the situation. The Indian government has urged for the immediate release of all hostages and emphasized the importance of sustaining humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.
The call for action comes in light of reports indicating that over 400 individuals lost their lives due to fresh Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “We are concerned at the situation in Gaza. It is important that all hostages are released. We also call for the supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza to be sustained.”
India’s Balanced Approach
India has consistently supported Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism, particularly following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which escalated the current crisis. However, India has also condemned the civilian casualties and urged adherence to international humanitarian law.
Despite its strong ties with Israel, India has maintained its relationship with the Palestinian people, advocating for their rights and supporting Palestine’s membership in the United Nations. India has provided approximately 70 metric tons of humanitarian aid since the onset of the conflict, alongside financial contributions totaling $10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), an organization currently facing restrictions from Israel.
