India, Argentina Sign Agreement for Exploration of Lithium, Other Critical Minerals
New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) – In a significant development for the mining sector, India and Argentina have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in the exploration and resource development of critical minerals, particularly lithium. This agreement was formalized in the presence of Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, and Raúl Alejandro Jalil, the Governor of Catamarca, Argentina.
The discussions centered around expanding cooperation in lithium exploration and investment opportunities. Both nations recognize the importance of critical minerals in the era of electric vehicles and renewable energy.
A key highlight was the signing of an MoU between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Mines of India, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca. This agreement is expected to pave the way for deeper collaboration in the exploration and development of these essential minerals.
Argentina, renowned for its vast lithium reserves, emerges as a crucial partner for India, especially for securing essential minerals needed for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage solutions.
Further discussions included ongoing lithium exploration efforts by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) & Greenko in Catamarca and the potential for increased participation of Indian companies in mining projects within Argentina.
Both parties explored avenues for investment, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures to strengthen India’s access to lithium. Senior officials engaged in discussions about policy frameworks, regulatory aspects, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership.
