India and Japan to Kick Off ‘Dharma Guardian’ Military Exercise
NEW DELHI: India and Japan are set to enhance their military collaboration with the upcoming ‘Dharma Guardian’ exercise, scheduled from February 25 to March 9 at Mount Fuji. This marks the sixth edition of the exercise, which aims to improve interoperability between the two nations’ forces through joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations.
Strengthening Bilateral Military Ties
Approximately 120 soldiers from the Madras Regiment will represent India in this significant military engagement. Both armies will share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures, ensuring a robust defense strategy.
Focus on Regional Security
India and Japan have been ramping up their military-to-military relations amid increased tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly due to China’s assertive posture. Their collaborative efforts include various exercises like the ‘Dharma Guardian’ for ground forces, ‘JIMEX’ for naval forces, and ‘Veer Guardian’ for air forces.
Participation in Global Military Exercises
Japan is also a regular participant in the prestigious Malabar naval exercise, which has evolved from a bilateral initiative with the U.S. into a multilateral exercise involving the four Quad countries: the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Defence-Industrial Collaboration
In addition to joint exercises, India and Japan are enhancing their defense-industrial collaboration by focusing on cutting-edge technologies. Initiatives include the development of the “Unicorn” stealth antenna system for Indian naval ships, as well as cooperation in space and cyber domains.
