India and England Cricketers Unite for Organ Donation Awareness
In a remarkable display of solidarity and social responsibility, the India and England cricket teams donned green armbands during the third ODI match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This powerful gesture was in support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) initiative, “Donate Organs, Save Lives,” which aims to raise awareness about the life-saving potential of organ donation.
A Pioneering Initiative by Jay Shah
The campaign, spearheaded by ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, was launched earlier this week. Shah emphasized the impact of sports in inspiring change beyond the playing field. “On the occasion of the 3rd ODI, we are proud to launch an awareness initiative—Donate Organs, Save Lives. One pledge, one decision, can save multiple lives. Let’s come together and make a difference!” he stated.
Star Players Advocate for Organ Donation
Several prominent Indian cricketers, including Virat Kohli and vice-captain Shubman Gill, took to social media to promote the cause. Kohli encouraged fans to “score the ultimate century” by registering as organ donors, highlighting that “your organs can help others live beyond your lifetime.” Gill likened pledging to donate organs to leading a team to victory, saying, “Be the captain of life.”
Other players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also lent their voices to the campaign. Iyer remarked that “one donor can save up to eight lives,” while Rahul added, “Your decision to donate your organs can be the match-winning moment in someone’s life.”
