India’s Bid to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games
India is gearing up to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, aiming to include all sports disciplines that were dropped from the 2026 edition in Glasgow. The sports ministry is set to initiate the process ahead of the March 31 deadline for submitting an Expression of Interest.
Reviving Key Sports
The primary goal behind this initiative is to maintain India’s medal tally, particularly in key sports such as hockey, wrestling, badminton, cricket, and shooting, which were excluded from the upcoming 2026 Games. An official from the sports ministry stated, “We have proposed that all the disciplines that have been removed from the 2026 CWG be held in India.” This move reflects India’s commitment to fostering a competitive environment for its athletes.
Streamlined Logistics
The decision to host these events in India also aims to create a budget-friendly and efficient logistical framework, as only four venues would be utilized for the entire event. India had previously made a similar proposal for the archery and shooting competitions during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which was approved but could not be executed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aiming for the Olympics
In addition to the Commonwealth Games, India is eyeing the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games. A letter of intent was sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year, and further developments are anticipated following the IOC elections next month.

The last time India hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 2010, and the nation’s renewed interest in hosting major sporting events illustrates its ambition to establish itself as a leading destination for international competitions.
