IAF to Enhance Defense Capabilities with Indigenous Low-Level Transportable Radars
New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster indigenous military capabilities, the Defence Ministry has signed a contract worth Rs 2,906 crore for the procurement of 18 ‘Ashwini’ low-level transportable radars (LLTRs) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This development marks a pivotal shift as the IAF will now induct indigenous LLTRs, moving away from reliance on imported systems. The contract was inked with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The ‘Ashwini’ LLTR is an active electronically scanned phased array radar that utilizes cutting-edge solid-state technology. It is adept at tracking a wide range of aerial targets, from high-speed fighter jets to slow-moving drones and helicopters. A Ministry of Defence (MoD) official highlighted that this acquisition will significantly enhance the operational preparedness of the IAF, contributing to self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
Strengthening National Defense
The induction of these indigenous radars is a vital step towards strengthening India’s defense-industrial ecosystem. The IAF currently employs various ground-based radars and airborne sensors for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) along critical borders with China and Pakistan. Additionally, the IAF is exploring the introduction of specialized mountain radars to monitor deep into enemy territory, especially along the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
This move aligns with the continuous efforts to upgrade India’s defense capabilities, especially following recent military confrontations in eastern Ladakh. The enhancement of radar technology is crucial as China has significantly upgraded its air bases and deployed an extensive network of radars and surface-to-air guided weapons.
