Gujarat Village Plans Grand Diwali-like Celebration for Astronaut Sunita Williams’ Return

Sunita Williams’ Grand Welcome Back to Earth

Nasa astronaut Sunita Williams’ ancestral village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district is gearing up for celebrations akin to Diwali as she prepares to return to Earth after an impressive nine-month stint at the International Space Station (ISS).

Prayers and Preparations in Jhulasan

The villagers of Jhulasan, the home of her father Deepak Pandya, have been fervently praying for her safe return. Special prayers have been offered, and an Akhand Jyot (eternal flame) has been lit at the local temple of Goddess Dola Mata. The community is excited, with plans for a grand procession featuring her photograph, prayer chants, and celebratory fireworks.

Festive Atmosphere

Navin Pandya, Williams’ cousin, expressed the villagers’ eagerness to invite her to visit Jhulasan in the future. “The atmosphere here is festive, with everyone eagerly anticipating her return,” he stated. The excitement has intensified following news of her third space mission.

Williams’ Remarkable Journey

Sunita Williams and astronaut Butch Wilmore are concluding their extended stay at the ISS, which was initially planned for seven days but was prolonged due to technical issues. Williams has made her mark as a pioneering female astronaut, logging 62 hours across nine spacewalks, a record for women in space.

As the villagers of Jhulasan prepare for a celebration reminiscent of Diwali, it’s a reminder of the profound connection between space exploration and community spirit.
