GPS Spoofing Threatens Aircraft Safety in Indian Airspace, Warns Government

GPS Spoofing: A Growing Concern in Indian Airspace

NEW DELHI: In a startling revelation, the Indian government has reported a significant uptick in GPS spoofing incidents affecting aircraft navigation systems in Indian airspace, particularly near the Pakistan border. Junior Civil Aviation Minister Murlidhar Mohol disclosed that airlines have reported 465 cases of GPS interference and spoofing between November 2023 and February 2025, specifically around Amritsar and Jammu.

Understanding GPS Spoofing

According to aviation experts, GPS spoofing involves transmitting counterfeit satellite signals to mislead Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, resulting in inaccurate position, navigation, and timing data. This phenomenon has primarily been observed in conflict zones, including the Black Sea and West Asia, but it is now making its way into Indian airspace.

Government Response and Safety Measures

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken swift action by issuing a circular in November 2023, mandating airlines to report any instances of GPS interference. The government is actively implementing guidelines from the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the European Union Safety Agency to combat this threat. Ground-based navigation systems are being maintained to provide pilots with alternative methods in case of GPS disruptions.

Challenges Faced by Pilots

Experienced pilots are increasingly reporting GPS spoofing and jamming issues, particularly when flying over regions such as Iran and Turkey. Many pilots have adapted by using alternative navigation methods, such as DME-DME updates, to track their positions accurately.

As the aviation sector grapples with this complex issue, staying informed and adopting best practices is crucial for ensuring the safety of air travel in India.
